PA Gymnastics

Gainsborough hosted and took part in the Primary Advantage Gymnastics Competition. Children had to learn a set floor routine and perform their own school routine in front of an audience and judges. Judges scored each performance against children’s presentation, coordination, fluency, posture and creativity. Congratulations to Springfield on winning the competition.

Art at Westfield!

Have you been to visit our incredible Art work at Westfield? 

This is photograph our students amazing Artwork which is now on display at Westfield covering the entire frontage of a shop on the ground floor! (ex Build a Bear Workshop.) The designs were made in Art lessons in the summer term and from a variety of year groups. We think it will be up for a few months so plenty of time to catch it!

We are going to introduce you to our Spanish amigos, they help us to learn Spanish with the correct pronunciation and perform a role play asking and answering questions about ourselves:

Music Display

Year 2 Music Workshop

Today Year 2 had a visit from trumpet and horn players Tom and Ben from the Worshipful Company of Musicians.  The children had some great questions to ask the musicians about their instruments and about what it's like to be a professional musician.  

Mayor's Music Awards

I am very proud to announce that at the Hackney Music Service Annual Gala last week, Gainsborough was awarded two Mayor’s Music Awards!  These awards recognise the quality of music education in Hackney schools.  The funding that we receive will help support our aspiring young musicians at Gainsborough. 

This week Year 5 had a steel pans workshop.  

Pen Pal Project

In our Spanish lessons we have started our Pen Pal project!

We partnered up with students from a school in Madrid (Spain) and we are going to start interchanging letters.
We sent our letters introducing ourselves and telling our Pen pals what things I like and what I like to do, it has been very exciting!

The Colour Wheel

In Art & Fashion Club this week we took Emma Fullbrook's advice and revisited the Colour Wheel!
Emma suggested that knowing more about the colour wheel would really help us to improve our use of colour and make our artworks more refined.


Why do Artists use the Colour Wheel?

Understanding the colour wheel and using colour theory in your artwork is a good idea for any artist as it supports our creative decision making. 
Primary colours are colours that cannot be made by mixing other colours.
THEY ARE RED,YELLOW and BLUE

Secondary colours are the colours we make when we mix the Primary colours together.

BLUE+YELLOW=GREEN
RED+BLUE=GREEN
YELLOW+RED=ORANGE

Ben Eine Typography

Ben Eine Display, Middle Hall, Year 5.

Year 5 have been exploring the work of artist Ben Eine. We researched Typography which is the Art of lettering. Ben Eine is a street artist whose work may be really familiar if you have ever walked from our school to Westfield through the Olympic Park, as he designed a wall of lettering near to the fairground!  Eine is famous for his alphabet lettering on shop shutters in London's Shoreditch, Brick Lane and Broadway Market areas.  He has also taken his lettering to the streets of Paris, Stockholm, Hastings and Newcastle upon Tyne. Year 5 responded to his work by producing oil pastel lettering of their first name initial. The work looks incredible and can be seen in the middle hall. Year 5 would be really interested to find out your opinions of their work as we are very proud of the results.

Fireworks Art

Art and Fashion Club have been inspired by the theme of celebration to create amazing large scale colourful artworks for Bonfire Night. We looked at artists that use oil pastel to create wonderful pattern on dark backgrounds, this medium enhances the contrast in colour and can be blended to look like lights. Emma suggested we use the colour wheel to help us decide which colours would work best together. Our artworks look wonderful! Well done all!

Photography Club

Today was our first Photography Club of this term for Year 4,5,6.  We explored how to use the camera on our Ipads and then edit to create a Kaleidoscope effect. We collected photographs of objects in the classroom to make a spectrum of colours (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue and Purple) Next we will develop our work into rainbows of colour to display around the school.
